Today marks the 50th anniversary since civil rights activist and leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
On the steps of Lincoln Memorial, President Barack Obama delivered his own speech, on Wednesday, where he acknowledges King’s dream and how they were materialized in his own success.
“Because they kept marching, America changed,” Obama said. “Because they marched, city councils changed and state legislatures changed and Congress changed and, yes, eventually, the White House changed.”
In discussing the injustice that still plagues African Americans in this country Obama adds, “To dismiss the magnitude of this process, to suggest, as some sometimes do, that little has changed, that dishonors the courage and the sacrifice of those who paid the price to march in those years.”
“To secure the gains this country has made requires constant vigilance, not complacency,” he continued. “We will suffer the occasional setback, but we will win these fights. This country has changed too much.”
Well said Mr. President!
