Who is Lupe Fuentes?

Some of you may know the 4″9″ 90 lbs pint size human barbie as the former adult entertainment vixen also known by the name “Little Lupe”. But these days the Columbian born beauty, of very humble beginnings, has shed her porn star image and aims to be the next pop star. With over 15 million views on Youtube her first single, “We Are The Party”, has already landed at #9 on the YouTube Weekly Music Chart.

Lupe has worked diligently these last two years, along with her group The Ex-Girlfriends, to shed her former image and bring her new venture as a pop star to life. Not only does she sings but she writes her own music, and she dances pretty vivaciously too!

I sat down with the lovely Ms. Fuentes to discuss her budding music career with her group and just what she has in store for her fans. Along with Lupe, the group is comprised of Smash a German Native-American, Baby J of Japanese and Brazilian decent, Dee-Love who is black and French and Tee-Money a Filipino. Here’s what she had to say.

Who is Lupe Fuentes?
I’m just a regular girl. I am just a normal girl who wants to follow her dreams. That’s a big part of my life. I’m finally doing what I’m passionate about. And I’m finally doing something for myself because I wanted to do it. I’m a big dreamer. I am myself.

When did you know you wanted to pursue a music career?
I have always been a very musical person. But I knew I wanted to follow my dreams and follow my music career two years ago.

I had the idea of forming this group (The Ex-Girlfriends) two years ago and leaving all my old life behind. But we released the group about two or three months ago but we’ve been practicing for over two years. Practicing dancing and singing non-stop, writing music. We’ve been going to the studio, meeting new producers, so over two years.

Where did the name The Ex-Girlfriends come from?
It is such a great name right? It’s catchy, memorable, everybody could relate to it. I feel like you can be an ex-girlfriend, you can have an ex-girlfriend…everybody can relate to it. I think it brings a message of friendship. When you’re in a relationship and that relationship ends the ones that are always there for you are your girls. They are always there supporting you and picking you up. So I think it’s a really good positive message for people. It’s about girlfriends, friendship, togetherness.

Are you afraid of the stigma that’s gonna come with your past life as a former adult entertainment vixen?
I’m not afraid. I think the moment I decided to pursue my music career I stopped being afraid of it…I am here to face this with whatever comes. There is a lot of people that are not going to like my music or like me because of my past but to those people I just want to say, ‘please give me a fair chance. Don’t judge me for my past. Judge me for who I am. I am a person and I think I deserve a fair chance from everybody.’ But I think also there is a lot of people that like me and there are people that are happy for me. That I am finally being myself but no I am not feeling scared. I am happy.

Where did the inspiration for debut single “We Are The Party” come from?

I wrote part of the song. I have a really good team of people that write and produce the songs with me. And I’m very lucky to have people like that who works with me. But we chose that song because it’s such a positive message. “We Are The Party”, it’s fun, it’s popular, it’s togetherness, it brings people together. It’s a really catchy song. We had other songs but we felt that was the perfect presentation card for us as a first single. Because it’s so popular so many people can relate to it, moms, kids, people can play it in the clubs, you can party with your family, your friends, boyfriend or husband. So we thought that was the best song.

What are you hoping will happen within the next year music wise for the group and yourself?
My goal? I want it all. Like I said before I’m a big dreamer. I want to be touring, I want to be performing live. I want to release my album through singles. I want to make music videos. I want to do everything. But the next immediate thing to do is to release a next single. We have three songs to choose from, “What You Lookin At”, it’s a story about a group of girls where guys are saying things to get their attention, the second is a love story and the third is a party song called “All Eyes On Me”.

Do you generally name all of the songs and give them their themes or the feel for the song?
Yes, I generally give the subject of the songs, I like to choose. That is a really important thing.

Who influenced you musically?
The Black Eye Peas, I love them so much. I feel they are futuristic and it’s one of the image that I want to give. I love that kind of vibe. LMFAO because of they’re funny lyrics. I want to make it fun because everybody likes fun and it’s something that nobody can argue with. If you’re in a bad situation and you’re having problems fun makes you forget about everything.

As for Latin Artists?
Shakira and J. Lo. I am a really huge fan of them and they inspire me a lot. I wish one day I can collaborate with them. Also 2NE1. They are a really great music group. They are Korean and they are four girls and they are really big and a big part of the Ex-Girlfriends (as inspiration).

Jenni Rivera recently passed in a tragic plane crash. Were you familiar with her music, did she inspire you in any way?
Definitely. It’s really sad. I remember when this happened to Aaliyah too. When something like this happens especially with someone so talented. I know her family is having a really hard time right now.

What does that mean to you as a Latina to achieve what Rivera was able to achieve with her own career after going through difficulty in her own [personal] life?
I think it’s huge. It’s a really big message for little Latina girls and not only for Latina girls. For other girls that love music or any form of art expression. I think it’s such a big message of positivity and overcoming bad situations in your life. I think she did a great job with that. I feel so sorry she’s not here anymore with us but that’s one of the things I want to do myself. I want to inspire people. Give them the positive message of overcoming bad situations because you can do it. If you work hard enough and you are passionate about something you can do anything you want. Look at me. Coming from what I came and having all this stuff that I have to deal with in my life. In the end I am here talking to you about my music and this is so big for me.

Very impressed with the song (which I only heard because of a pop-up). I admire Ms Fuentes in wanting to take such a career change as she clearly has SO much more to her, going by her singing and song writing thus far. Truly wish the Ex-Girlfriends the best and in my opinion a group that really deserves a push to the top! Merry Christmas ladies. 🙂
