Today makes one year since the January 12, 2010 earthquake that left the island of Haiti devastated. The catastrophic earthquake nearly crippled the island killing over 230,000 people. Remains are still being found to this day. Nearly a million people still live in refugee camps set up in every available space in the capital.
According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, so far, over $1 billion were raised by various agencies and over $1.4 billion more was contributed by Americans in the aid relief. Sadly, only 38% has been spent for recovery and relief efforts. U.S. & foreign officials agree they have not reached target goals that were set months ago. There are ongoing issues with bringing aid to the people quickly and efficiently, re-establishing government and housing conditions.
So many unanswered questions still linger and Haiti’s people have grown impatient and desperate for a quick resolution. It is believed, however, that it will take 20 years before the island will fully recover from the devastation.
