During the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards, held in Atlanta last weekend, Kendrick Lamar participated in the well known Cypher and rhymed, “Yea and nothing’s been the same since they dropped Control and tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes. Ha-ha, jokes on you. Hi-five, I’m bulletproof…”
Competitive words coming from the Compton, California Hip-Hop artist, who Instagram’d a video clip from his verse on the Cypher, with the caption “Kill ‘em?” just a week before the show aired. Apparently, Kendrick Lamar was more than serious when he said, “I got love for y’all but I’m trying to murder you niggas,” in his verse on Big Sean’s “Control,” which has received much controversy and even more notoriety since it’s release in August. He may have done just that when he spit for two minutes straight during BET’s the Cypher, along with fellow Top Dawg Entertainment signees, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Isaiah Rashad. So, what do you think, did Kendrick “Kill ‘em” or has hip-hop been missing it’s lyrical competitiveness for so long that they were already dead (as in not on his level skills wise)?

Im a huge fan of Kendrick loved since he came out before the control verse hype. In this cypher though he only had 2 lines that really killed em. His skill overall has been missing in the game as most rappers are just putting out gimmicky songs that just repeat the same words over and over again, so his type of talent has been missed and I hope has woke sleeping ny rappers to get back to spitting real
Hip hop (and country) is popular music now. We aren’t going to hear amazing and deep lyrics by mainstream acts very often. It’s all about having an infectious beat and a catchy hook.
True, but maybe he can push other rappers to bring some creativity back to the music to say the least; and in-turn people will have something to listen to and THINK about.
He is right, Drake is very sensitive about his ish
This is true…but I think too many ppl are on Kendrick’s balls just to band-wag.
I am a huge Kendrick Lamar fan and this was definitely one of the most best written articles I have read about him in a while. This writer is DOPE and I look forward to reading more of her works.
Well written! King Kendrick easily has one of the best flow out right now!
