Georgia Twins Get 30 Years For Murdering Mom

Nearly five years ago, Georgia twins Jasmiyah and Tasimyah Whitehead were charged with killing their own mother, Jarmecca Whitehead.

Although the twins, then 16, initially denied being responsible for their mother’s death, it seems, they’ve now changed their tune.They’re giving a confession of the events that led up to their mother’s death.

It all started in the kitchen of their Conyers, Ga., home after the twins’ mother began fussing with them about being late for school—or at least that is what Jasmiyah and Tasmiyah Whitehead, both of whom are serving 30 years in prison for the brutal murder of their mother, claim happened Jan. 13, 2010.

In their confession, the two then-16-year-olds allege that their mother, Jarmecca Whitehead, began threatening them with a cooking pot.

“She just started waving the pot around things like that, whatever, so I guess she was trying to hit us with the pot,” said Jasmiyah on a videotape viewed by WCNC.

The twins both claim that during the argument, they got the pot away from their mother but that sparked a full-on fight.

“Was your mom yelling?” Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Read asked.

“We all yelling, we all mad. Somehow, some way, I don’t know where she got it from, I don’t even remember a knife block, but she has a knife,” said Jasmiyah.

“I had took the pot from her; that’s when she grabbed the knife and said ‘Get back,’ but she didn’t keep the knife in her hand,” added Tasmiyah.

Jasmiyah said that the fight continued, and at one point, she broke a vase over her mother’s head. According to both women, their mother began fighting even harder.

Tasmiyah grabbed the pot and hit her mother with it: “So my mom is winning the battle with the knife or whatever, so I pick up the pot and hit her with the pot.”

“She bit me in the chest, and like I said, I’m not that that big, so when she bit me she latched on to me and I tried to get her off because it hurts, so I’m trying to punch her. I guess that then Tas stabs her. She stabbed her,” said Jasmiyah.

The three continued fighting, and at one point Jasmiyah took a ribbon medallion that she’d won as a child to choke her mother, according to WCNC.

“So I think I was stunned. Then I picked up the knife and I think I stabbed her, but they wasn’t cuts—like, they wasn’t deep—because I couldn’t bring myself to do it,” said Jasmiyah.

Jasmiyah then grabbed her mother’s feet and Tasmiyah took her mother’s hands and they dragged her body to the bathtub. They both claim that they don’t know why they carried her to the bathtub, but they noted that their mother was still alive and was talking to them.

“What’s she say?” Read asked.

“That she hates us, she hates us. I guess the same thing: We’re going to jail, we’re going to jail,” Jasmiyah replied.

“What are you saying to her?” Read asked.

“I’m sorry. I told her I was sorry, not just sorry for things but sorry for everything that we couldn’t get along and stuff,” Jasmiyah said.

Jasmiyah said that her mother then went “under a few times” and “that was it.”

The twins claim that they were in shock and that they cried. They then gathered up the pot and knife, took their mother’s purse and cellphone, and left for school.

“Just really wish it didn’t happen like that, and I wish I could have solved something. I do, I wish … sorry. … It was just confusion and turmoil and it never stopped,” said Tasmiyah, crying.

The girls, who have told several versions of what happened that day, admit that they wished things had been different, that they had just called the police when the fight happened. They added that they wished their mother was still alive.

“I’m sorry and I miss her. It’s not how y’all are trying to make it seem. I didn’t hate her. And Tas didn’t hate her, either,” said Jasmiyah. “I guess it was just the heat of the moment and the anger between all three of us.”
