How Publicist Lillie Mae Became a ‘Love is Blind’ Castmate & Reality Star

Publicist Lillie Mae has over a decade of expertise in the public relations field, but this PR professional has now added reality television star to her resume after joining the cast of ‘Love Is Blind.’ Instead of pitching clients, Mae became a household name worth pitching.

By Her Own Rules had the pleasure of speaking to the PR vet on her journey to reality TV and more. Here’s what she had to say.

Many people don’t know that you’ve been a well-known publicist before landing a spot on ‘Love Is Blind, how did that come about?

Yes, I’ve been a full-time entrepreneur and Public Relation Strategist for 10+ years. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, I was excited to move to a bigger city with more opportunities.  After landing my dream job in Atlanta, then getting laid off months later, I was inspired to start my first entrepreneurial pursuit so that I could take charge of my professional fate.  I realized early on is that you can’t wait for opportunities, you have to create them. Being resourceful, creative, and proactive are key components for living by your own rules.  Fast forward many years later and it has been quite a fulfilling journey! I’ve attended numerous red carpet events like the MTV VMA’s, confirmed clients for nationwide media placements on BET, USA Today, Huffington Post, People Magazine, Black Enterprise, Billboard Magazine, and have hosted empowerment events across the country.

We didn’t see you go on to make any love connections on the show, did you meet anyone there that you had a strong connection with?

The guys were fun to talk to, but no strong connection was made.  I do however remember having the most laughs with Carlton, Barnett and Mikey.

What have you learned about yourself romantically or just from participating in ‘Love is Blind’ that has influenced how you date now?

I was pretty self-aware before embarking on the show, so I can’t say I learned anything new about dating. But I can say that having the chance to connect with people, without the distractions of work and social media, was quite refreshing during the experiment. I’ve always been and still remain a hopeful romantic!

What were you surprised by while watching with the rest of the world?

It was surreal to see myself on a Netflix show that was a worldwide hit.  It was so well produced, I’m very excited to have been apart of such an amazing cast. I had no idea how the relationships would unfold, so it was all a surprise to watch.  I do remember when Lauren first told us about her dreamy connection with Cameron, and now they are married…. how cool is that!

Have you remained close to any other ‘Love is Blind’ castmates?

We definitely stay in communication with each other and did the “Don’t Rush” social media challenge as a group which was pretty fun. Several of us have relocated outside of Atlanta since filming, which makes it challenging to hang out, but we all support each other’s efforts.

How has your ‘Love is Blind’ appearance enhanced your brand and business?

The show appearance did encourage me to speak more openly about the single journey, so that was a great takeaway as well.  I was inspired to write the book “Dear Singlepreneur” afterward which includes tips to help women entrepreneurs successfully manage their single journey. I also wrote an article for BlackLove.com about how to maintain peace during quarantine as a single person.

Do you regret it? Why or why not?

No regrets! You only live once, so being brave and taking risks is what makes it a more colorful journey.  This was a once in a lifetime experience that I enjoyed and will never forget.
