Kelly Rowland‘s latest album, ‘Here I Am’, debuted #3 on the Billboard’s 200 chart this week. The album has sold 76,399 copies. Not bad for an album that received minimal promotion leading up to its release last week. Besides Rowland’s smashing BET Awards performance, the album’s promotion lacked to say the least. Although the album is not the singer’s highest charting album (her 2006 album, ‘Ms. Kelly’ debuted #2) it has given the singer her first #1 and commercial hit, with “Motivation” featuring Lil’ Wayne. However, I cannot deny I am a bit disappointed. I would have loved to see Ms. Rowland break the 100k mark. Perhaps despite a #1 single or even the lack of promotion, the album also lacks depth and more hits. This is solely my opinion of course (and this is coming from a Rowland fan). Moving along….
It seems Adele‘s ’21’ is still going strong since its release earlier this year, coming in at #2. Her album has already sold over 8 million copies worldwide while simultaneously breaking records. Undoubtedly Adele’s 21 is the best selling album this year. Beyonce‘s ‘4’ album, released June 24th, seems to be going strong as well. The album comes in just behind Rowland at #4. In fact, of August 1st, the has gone platinum, according to the RIAA, with the shipment of 1 million albums in the U.S. alone. Although there has been some confusion as of late, let me emphasize by saying, units shipped does not mean units sold. To date the album has sold over 500,000, making gold but is expected to officially go platinum.
Nonetheless, Rowland’s album still has potential with second single, “Lay It On Me” featuring Big Sean, which impacted radio just today by the way. The mid-tempo single may not garner another #1 hit but it is still a genuinely good song that may perform well on the charts. Over time (perhaps?) ‘Here I Am’ could potentially give Ms. Rowland more success than her previous solo projects. Only time will tell. Furthermore congrats to Kelly on the album and future projects.
