We recently told you that a ‘Lifetime’ movie biopic was in works of the late and great R&B singer Aaliyah Haughton.
In fact, Disney singer, dancer, and actress Zendaya Coleman was chosen to play the role. Coleman’s selection, however, caused a bit of controversy after some fans felt that she was not the right person to play the role. We’ve now learned that the film, still in pre-production, is causing yet another controversy.
The family of the late singer is said to be upset at the direction Lifetime seems to be taking with the film.
It’s believed that the network is to aiming to include details of the singer’s controversial marriage to mentor, R. Kelly, during the early stages of her career. She was just 15 years old while Kelly was 27.
The marriage was later annulled and court documents sealed.
Kelly, on the other hand, would later face charges, yet again, of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The case was later settled for $250,000.
The singer passed in a tragic plane crash in 2001 at just 22 years old.
Teyana Taylor and BET’s ‘106 & Park’ host Keisha Chante, who also auditioned for the role, have both released statements over their desire to not move forward in the audition process over the family’s disapproval of the film.
We wonder whether Zendaya will do the same?
What are your thoughts CK readers? Should the film be made without compromise or should producer’s take the family’s concern into consideration?
We’d love to hear your thoughts.
