The “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” Lifetime biopic is still a go! After Disney actress and singer Zendaya Coleman had a change of heart and pulled out from the film earlier this month, producers were in a frenzy to find a replacement.
On Friday, it was announced that Nickelodeon actress and singer Alexandra Shipp 23, would be that replacement.
Although Coleman faced backlash from critics for not being “good enough” to play the role, according to her team, there was a conflict in her schedule which prevented her from filming. Some speculate, however, that a combination of the unexpected backlash and the disapproval of members of Aaliyah’s family over the direction the film was taking, was more than enough reason for the young actress to back out.
But, that’s not all. Talk show maven, Wendy Williams, and her production team will be joining the executive producers of the film. Of the announcement the Wendy Show shared the following message, “Wendy and Wendy Williams Productions are proud to announce that they are joining Debra Martin Chase as executive producers on the Aaliyah Lifetime movie! Production begins later this month with Alexandra Shipp playing Aaliyah.”
Shipp has already received positive reviews from critics for resembling the late singer. But we have to wonder, will Shipp deliver?
What are your thoughts CK readers, do you think Shipp will do the role justice, and, are you excited about the film?
