Ariel Castro, the man responsible for the kidnapping, rape and abuse of three Cleveland women, has committed suicide in prison.
Castro, sentenced to life in prison for his crimes was found hanged in his prison cell Tuesday night, according to the Ohio corrections office where he was stationed.
Although Castro had been under protective custody and isolate form other inmates, it seems, he was only a danger to himself. He was found dead at approximately 9:20 pm, where correction staff had been making their rounds.
After an attempted resuscitation by prison medical personnel, he was pronounced dead 90 minutes later, according to Rehabilitation and Correction Department spokeswoman JoEllen Smith.
On August 1st, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 1,000 years in prison, without the possibility of parole ,for the abduction and imprisonment of his three victims, Amanda Berry, 27, Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, for a decade.
He was taken into custody, on May 6, following the discovery of the three women when Berry made an escape with the assistance of a neighbor.
Castor later plead guilty to a total of 937 offenses, including kidnapping, rape, felonious assault and a charge of aggravated murder under a fetal homicide law for the forcible miscarriage of one of his three victims.
His plea deal with prosecutors spared him his life and Castro escape a possible death penalty.
He had been incarcerated at the Correctional Reception Center in Ohio since August 5th.
He was 53 years old.
