On Monday evening Big Sean tweeted out a link to a song that he said did not make his new album because of some sample clearance issues. The song, “Control (HOF)” features Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica.
Big Sean starts of the song and does his thing, but then here comes Kendrick and let’s just say this is a memorable day for Hip Hop. In a grimy undertone, Lamar definitely has a statement to make. “I’m Makaveli’s offspring/ I’m the King of New York/ King of the coasts/ One hand, I juggle them both.” Very bold words for the Cali Native. But it didn’t stop there. He then challenges a list of rappers and many feel that it was a flat out diss. “I’m usually homeboys with the same ni**as I’m rhymin’ with/ But this is hip-hop and them ni**as should know what time it is. And then goes Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T, Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all, but I’m tryna murder you ni**as/ Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you ni**as/ They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you ni**as.”
Of course a few rappers have already taken to Twitter to express their feelings about the track.
That last one by Lupe had my mind blown for a while, lol. But you can see Kendrick definitely got a rise out of some rappers, even if they weren’t involved in his “calling out.” I, personally, don’t think it was a diss in a way to put these artist down. I feel that Kendrick is looking for some friendly competition and I cannot wait to hear what comes from this. One thing for sure, regardless if you are a fan or not, it’s is about to get interesting.
