After serving nearly 3 years behind bars for attacking a woman with a rum bottle back in 2007, rapper Da Brat, real name Shawntae Harris, has just been ordered to pay the victim $6.4 in damages.
It seems Brat’s time in jail wasn’t enough. Shayla Stevens, the woman she attacked (a former Atlanta Falcons cheerleader and waitress) also filed a civil suit against the rapper for her crime. The two got into a very heated exchange at a 2007 Halloween bash at Studio 72, a club owned by music mogul and Brat’s long-time music producer and friend Jermaine Dupri, when the assault took place.
Brat appeared in a Cobb County, GA courtroom, Thursday afternoon (February 27, 2014), and was ordered to pay the victim $3.7 million in compensatory damages and an additional $2.7 million in punitive damages.
Wow! A harsh ruling considering the crime, wouldn’t you say?
“I’m baffled,” the rapper’s attorney B.J. Bernstein said. “She owned up to what happened when it happened and was punished.”
Steven’s attorney, however, argued that his client sustained lifelong injuries in the assault.
“She has a brain injury and is a brain injury survivor,” attorney Mark Link told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. “It’s not something that will ever go away. She has a scar on her face. She had so much going for her and for it come to an abrupt stop because of this attack.”
Harris, 39, served 2 and a half years at the Arrendale State Prison before her release in 2011. She will remain on probation until 2017.
According to Harris’ attorney, she’s unsure whether she’ll appeal the decision.
