Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 1.22.33 PMEminem may be known for cleaning out his closet and bashing his mother, but his new video Headlights takes quite a different direction.

The 41-year-old rapper released the Headlights video yesterday. This song, which is the fifth single off The Marshall Mathers LP 2, is an apology to Eminem’s mother, Debbie Mathers. The video details Eminem’s relationship with Debbie through her eyes, with clips of several of his songs where he attacked his mother, including The Real Slim Shady and most famously, Cleaning out my Closet. We see her make several attempts to reconcile with her son, but she is turned away by security guards at his home. Between the old photos of ‘Em and the heart-wrenching lyrics, Headlights reminds you of old Eminem, only with a bit softer side.

At the end of the Spike Lee directed-clip, Debbie drives by her son’s house while Eminem is driving away. Once he sees her, Eminem gets out of the car and embraces his mother and after a short hug, they drive their separate ways. The line “I hope you get this message that I’ll always love you from afar” couldn’t be more fitting for this touching video.
