Legendary four term DC mayor and D.C Council member, Marion Barry has passed away at the age of 78.

His death came just hours after being discharged from Howard University Hospital around 6:30 pm Saturday night.

Barry died at the United Medical Center at approximately 1:46 am, Sunday morning, after arriving at 12:30 am.

He was rushed to the medical facility after collapsing while entering his home late Saturday night.

As for what caused his death, though Barry has suffered from multiple health problems for years, the UMC spokeswoman did not disclose the actual cause of death.

As best described by the Washington Post, “The most powerful local politician of his generation, he was a national symbol of self-governance and home rule for urban blacks, even as his personal and public life was fraught with the high drama of a drug arrest and jail sentence.”

The mayor’s wife, Cora Masters Barry and son, Christopher Barry, along with his pastor and personal aid are all said to have been by his side when he passed.

May he rest in peace.
