Former MTV Executive Terrence Dean’s book Hiding in Hip Hop:On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry from Music to Hollywood has tongues waging as its descriptive pages takes you through the secretive lives of homosexuality in Hip Hop. Although Dean is careful not to reveal any names there have been a few names circulating as to who the main characters Corey and Eli are. Dean also brings to light a few female RnB and rappers who are also on the “DL”, has he says. Again, he is careful not to reveal any names as to whom these women are. Dean explains, “This book is filled with intrigue, sexy celebrity partners, abundance of drugs, and of course, the down low/say men and celebrities in the entertainment industry….This book is my voice, your voice, and many other voices of people who love Hip Hop, the black church, the black community, our families–our uncles, aunts, brothers, and sisters who are gay, or on the down low”.
A few names to have been maentioned are Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Tashiena Arnold, Usher, Diddy etc. Understandably no one has come out to dispute and acknowledge these allegations but I’m guessing there is more to come of this story.
