The ever outspoken and fearless actress, Jada Pinkett Smith, posed a very interesting question, Saturday morning, while reflecting on the Academy Awards representation, or lack there of, when it comes to people of color.
Taking to her Facebook profile, the actress and social activist writes, “At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments.”
She then posed this question to nearly 7.5 million Facebook followers, “Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow.”
Pinkett-Smith’s statements comes just days after Oscar nominations were revealed on Thursday, January 14, 2016.
The Facebook post ended with, “With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment, J.”
She joins civil rights activist Al Sharpon and actor John Stamos, who’ve also shared their own thoughts about people of color being under-represented. And this isn’t the first time the actress has spoken out against racial prejudice. She’s also spoken out against sex trafficking and violence against women all around the world.
Do you think the actress has a point about the lack of diversity at the Oscars?
The Academy Awards is set to on February 28th on ABC at 7pm EST.
