Were you just as surprised as we were when we found out Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli were divorcing? This is one Hollywood couple we thought wound make it.

In the wake of the couples divorce announcement, actress Jennie Garth spoke exclusively with PEOPLE in a recent interview and says, “I tried to save my marriage.” She also reveals Peter had actually confessed he’s wanted a divorce last fall but she was initially in denial.

“I was very resistant,” she tells PEOPLE. “I didn’t want it to happen. It took me some time to come to peace with it.”

She also reveals they’ve spent less time together in the last 2 year as her husband career took off. As he filmed ‘Twilight’ and the sequels that followed she says, “He would do everything he could to fly back every weekend [But] it took a real toll on our marriage.”

Since then, “I’ve gone through my darkest parts and I’m coming out of it. I’m okay. I don’t know what the future holds, but then I’ve never been a planner. And maybe that’s a good thing.”

Although, we now know, they’ve been separated for months, the ‘Twilight’ actor didn’t actually file for divorce until this past Wednesday as more details of his crumbling marriage became prevalent and his wife’s more recent interviews.

The couple, who wed in 2001, have three daughters together, Luca, 14, Lola, 9 and Fiona, 5.
