Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way’ not only debuted at #1, but it sold over 1 million copies in one week! Can you say wow!!! The little monsters have taken over for sure.
The album sold 1,108,000 copies in its first week to be exact! According to Nielsen SoundScan, its only the 17th album to sell a million copies in a week since SoundScan began tracking album sales back in 1991, and the highest sales week since 2005’s ‘The Massacre’ by 50 cent, which sold 1,141,000 in its first week.
Another major accomplishment for Gaga, ‘Born This Way‘ is also her first #1 album to date. 2008’s ‘The Fame’ debut and peaked at #2 while 2009-2010’s ‘The Fame Monster’ EP reached #5.
The heightened sales, however, could have been boosted by Amazon’s sale of the album for $.99 last Monday. The high volume of traffic even resulted in a freeze on Amazon’s website, causing the site to again sell the album at $.99 a unit on Wednesday. Initial projections were set at 400,000 but by Monday night projections were well in the 650,000-700,000 mark. Many began to wonder if Gaga had what it took to garner sales in the 1 million mark. And well, she surpassed expectations.
Mother Monster sure has some loyal followers. Kudos to Gaga and her success!
