Screenwriter, producer and actress Lena Waithe has just confirmed that she and longtime girlfriend and actress Alana Mayo have secretly wed.
Waithe who sat down with People magazine’s newly announced ‘Sexiest Man Alive‘, John Legend, as he guest hosted for The Ellen Show, revealed that she is now a wife.
“We snuck and did it. We didn’t really make any announcements,” Waithe stated.
When a photo of the duo emerged on a backdrop during the interview, Waithe happily announced, “There she is…that’s my wife.”
“We went to the courthouse and got married in front of Harvey Milk’s bust…It was her idea like all good things are. And she was just driving and said we should get married there. And I said, cool, I’m down.”
After noting the important legacy and influence the late and openly gay former congressman Harvey Milk had on the LGBTQ community, Waithe adds, “It was a humbling day to marry someone so amazing, but also to appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that. So it was good.”
Waithe also spoke on her 2017 historical Emmy win for Master of None, her current project, Queen and Slim, Oscar buzz and more.
Waithe and Mayo became engaged on Thanksgiving in Tokyo back in 2017. Check out the full intefiview below:
