As we reported yesterday, actress Lupita Nyong’o was named the most beautiful person of 2014 by People Magazine (See HERE). Yas! Ms. Nyong’o definitely deserves that title.
We constantly see images of models with lighter skin, lighter hair and European features. The mainstream media leads us to believe that those women are the definition of beauty. However, (as cliche as this may sound) beauty comes in different colors, sizes, shapes and forms. There are beautiful dark skinned women and they should be celebrated just as much as women with light skin are!
Lupita has addressed the media issues stating,
“Whether we like to admit it or not, the media plays a really big role in how we see ourselves, the media is a mirror of what’s important, what’s relevant, what’s valid.”
In February, at Essence’s 7th annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, the actress explained this further while highlighting her own struggle with her skin color. The last part of her speech speaks volumes– she said,
“There is no shame in black beauty.”
You tell ’em girl!
Earlier today, in honor of TBT, Lupita posted a photo on Instagram with her baby photo from 1983 right next to a recent photo of herself. The caption in the baby photo reads, “Most beautiful, huh?” and in her latest photo, it says, “Bet u ain’t know!” The caption below the photo collage says, “Love your stage at any age!” Look at that, Lupita fooled everyone- the 31-year old starred in an award-winning film, won an Academy Award, became the first ever black ambassador for Lancome and on top of that, was named Most Beautiful Person! Oh and don’t forget we aren’t even halfway done with 2014. I wonder what else is in store for Lupita this year!
