Actor Michael Ealy recently sat down with Rolling Out magazine to talk all things love and marriage. He speaks on his upcoming romantic film with comedian Kevin Hart, ‘About Last Night,’ and even opens up on why he decided to get married.
Ealy shocked us all and broke many hearts when news of his secret nuptials (See HERE), to long time girlfriend Khatira Rafiqzada, was revealed back in 2012.
In fact, no one knew he was taken! A well kept secret, wouldn’t you say?
What Can We Expect From His Latest Film, ‘About Last Night’:
About Last Night is a romantic comedy, where unlike most, we really deal with the complexities of relationships. We delve deeply into both the good and the bad, and not just gloss over the romanticized parts as is often done.
On Why People Seem To Enjoy Watching Him In Romantic Comedies:
In another interview, a writer called me the ”new king of romantic comedies,” and I thought that was funny, because I’ve only done one. I did one romantic comedy, and that was Think Like a Man, and that’s because that was the first time that I had read a script for this genre that was smart. So the idea that I’m this new king of romantic comedies, well I don’t know if that’s true … but what I will say is this; in the future I will do more if they are just as smart, and just as funny. As it relates to About Last Night, as much as people want to call it a romantic comedy, the tone is more similar to that of a Love Jones. It’s more about exploring the complexities of a relationship versus it being ‘funny, funny, ok now we love each other.’ We get into the minutiae, which made this right for me to delve into the genre again.
On Stretching His Acting Muscles & Taking On Different Roles:
For me, I’m always going to try and stretch. I feel like my television show, ”Almost Human” gives me that opportunity. I’m not playing a human … I’m playing a machine that wants to be human, and I feel like that’s allowing me to increase my range and increase my body of work. But I have found that the thing that I haven’t being able to do yet is play evil personified … I haven’t been the good villain yet. That’s what I’m looking to do to show that side. Not that I just want to be bad, but I believe that is the next chapter for me, and I’m looking forward to it.
On Why He Decided To Get Married:
Well, you know me, and you know that I am an extremely private person. But what I can say is that I’m not a young cat anymore. I’ve gone through my share of relationships, which ironically enough, I think have contributed to the work that I’ve done in some of these relationship films. I can relate to Danny in this new film, because I was him. So when I watched the film I was so happy that I had matured beyond that point in my life. Don’t get me wrong; marriage opens up an entirely different can of worms as it pertains to your evolution as a man. I’ve found that for me, the timing of it was right … that’s all that I can really say. And that’s a personal decision that was not made in haste, because we were together for four years. But when you find someone — and that’s something that is very hard to do … but when you find someone that you actually want to spend the rest of your life with, you have to go for it. I was just very lucky that the stars lined up for me.
On What Advice He’d Give Men Who Are Thinking About Getting Married:
While, I don’t consider myself a person that should write a book, or give advice on relationships, what I will share is my personal perspective. What helped me along the way was I had two personal friends of mine whose fiancés died. And I went through a personal struggle where my father got really sick, and I spent a week with him … and it just dawned on me that we don’t have as much time as we think. And when you’re done playing games, and you find someone who has qualities that are much more practical as opposed to romanticized ideals, then you’ve got to hold on to them. People think that you’re supposed to marry your type … well, I didn’t marry my type. It’s much more practical, and based in a day-to-day existence. So when you have that, and you’re happy, and you love her, don’t waste time. Because time — and I’ve learned that at this point in my life — time is my most precious commodity. Nothing is more precious than time. Because when it runs out … that’s it.
Well said Mr. Ealy.
