Vibe magazine’s latest issue is stiring up some major controversy. Its choice in their featured cover, which includes reality stars Kandi Burruss, Tamar Braxton, Evelyn Lozada and Chrissy Lampkin , has got people fuming.
Although Kandi Burruss and Tamar Braxton are both accustomed to being in the limelight for their musical background, it wasn’t until ‘Basketball Wives’ and ‘Love and Hip Hop’ that we were introduced to Lozada and Lampkin. Burruss and Braxton have also jumped on the reality show bandwagon with their own ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and ‘Braxton Family Values’. But what’s the fuss about? Perhaps the magazine’s caption, “Meet Your New Role Models”.
Yup, you read that correctly.
If you watch any of these shows then you’ll know the success of these shows usually relies on the amount of drama that can be stirred up; encouraging the women to be catty toward each other and even throw a few blows. Not the kind of role models a parent would want their child looking up to right?
Although Kandi Burruss is known a the successful singer-songwriter and Tamar Braxton as the loud mouth youngest sibling of Toni Braxton waiting for her big break, it’s Lampkin and Lozada who’ve received the most flack for their mouthy, violent and even bullying antics on their shows.
Initially when I saw the magazine I brushed it off but after reading the caption I was, like many others, perplexed! But here’s the thing. Whether you, I, or anyone else like it or not these women have become role models. Not in the we would like but millions of women and girls watch them and may even be inspired to take on the same route to fame. If you too could garner farther success, business ventures, and make millions by “dumbing” yourself down, being catty and were even willing to throw some blows wouldn’t you?
Hey, I’m not saying it’s right but this is, perhaps, a reflection of the society we live in. Think about it…
