Pharrell "Marilyn Monroe" Single Cover With Black Model

After facing criticism over his “Girl” album artwork for not featuring a diversity of ethnic women, Pharrell Williams is now sending a message to his critics with single artwork, “Marilyn Monroe.”

Sharing the photo on Wednesday (April 23, 2014), Williams announced that the single would debut on Thursday, April 24, 2014. He wrote, “Tomorrow…#MarilynMonroe.”

But that was not what had been on everyone’s mind. Pharrell may have finally “gotten it right.”

The cover features an African American woman of a darker skin complexion, bright red lipstick and a Marilyn Monroe-esque black wig.

The image spoke volumes considering brown girls, especially those who opt to wear bright shades of lipstick, are often criticized for their look. The kind of look that’s often under represented in magazines and on television and film.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, a brown girl, was just named People magazine’s most beautiful celebrity of 2014 (See HERE).

Upon sharing this second photo Williams again added, “My new video for #MarilynMonroe: http://smarturl.it/MMvideo That which makes you different, is what makes you special. #Different.”
