President Obama Proposes Free Community College Initiatives

President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama announced, on Thursday, his proposal to make community college, “free for everybody who is willing to work for it.” But administration officials provided no details about the program’s costs or where the money would come to pay for it.

Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who’s willing to work for it,” he said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anyone in the world.”
According to a White House fact sheet released Thursday night, full-time and part-time community college students who maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and make “steady progress toward completing their program” in states that elect to participate in the program will be eligible.

In turn, the federal government will cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college. The responsibility of paying any remaining tuition costs for the two-year period not covered by federal funding then falls to participating states.
