While giving a speech in Malaysia on foreign affairs, over the weekend, President Barack Obama was asked to share his thoughts on Donald Sterling‘s racist remarks against African Americans and Latinos.
“When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything,” the President said of the L.A. Clipper’s owner. “You just let them talk. That’s what happened here.”
The President also pointed out that Sterling’s comments is an example of how “the United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation.”
“That’s still there, the vestiges of discrimination,” he adds. “We’ve made enormous strides, but you’re going to continue to see this percolate up every so often.”
Obama also stated that Sterling’s comments were “incredibly offensive” and that he’s confident that the NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, will make the right decision in resolving the matter.
