Some very sad news in the music world today. Singer Teena Marie died at the age of 54 her manager, Mike Gardner, confirms. Although the details of her passing are still unknown, its believed the singer passed in her sleep.
What we do know, the singer, who was scheduled for a New Years Eve concert in Atlanta, was found by her daughter in her California home today.
RadioFacts.com was the first to report the news who then sent along the link to Philadelphia radio station WDAS. Further confirmation came from CNN reporter Rolands Martin who tweeted about the singer’s passing.
Born Marie Christine Brockert, Teena Marie rose to prominence in the late 70s and 80s, striking a musical and personal partnership with funk legend Rick James. She released 13 studio albums, six of which went platinum on the US R&B chart. Two of her albums went platinum, and six altogether were gold.
Marie’s biggest hit came in 1984 with her single ‘Lovergirl’ and her most notable duet with one time lover and mentor Rick James, “Fire And Desire”
Reportedly, the singer suffered from a seizure sometime last month. On Christmas day one of Marie’s last tweets
“Sarah Vaughan, may you never grow old, and may I never die…”
Sadly, we must also report the night the singer passed away was her daughter and only child’s, Alia Rose, 19th birthday.
On Christmas Eve the singer also tweeted,
“19 yrs ago today, I was in labor! My heavenly father gave me the most glorious gift I could ever receive. A Baby girl on Christmas!”
