A 36 year old man, Tyson Smith, should consider himself the luckiest man alive right now. The San Diego native with an enlarged heart, received a heterotopic heart transplantation, also known as a “piggyback” transplant. The procedure paired another heart to his weak one, allowing the pair to share the work.
Before the operation doctors gave Smith a month to live, but luckily received a heart in time to save his life for Valentine’s Day.
In the 30 years that Smith’s doctor has been performing heart transplants, has only performed this procedure five times.
