The numbers are in! Beyonce has attained her fourth #1 album selling 313,420 copies of her latest album, ‘4’, during its first week sales. Although it is her least commercial album to date the album was still able to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200. Knowles’ previous album, ‘Dangerously In Love’, ‘B’Day’, & ‘I Am… Sasha Fierce’, sold 317,000 units, 541,000 units and 482,000 respectively.
But nothing to worry about, Beyonce is having the best week ever! The album was originally slated to hit the 275-300k mark as of last Wednesday and easily surpassed expectations (heavy promotion of the singer’s latest effort towards the end of the week didn’t hurt much either). Ms. Knowles also made history as the first female to headline The 2011 Glastonbury Festival in its 41 years. She hit a high note with ‘Good Morning America’s’ summer concert series this past week, and gave NBC it’s highest ratings in 10 years for its annual ‘Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular’, performing her latest “Best I Never Had” and her own rendition of “America the Brave”.
‘4’, not well received by critics, is also Knowles’ most personal work yet, making it clear she has nothing to prove. The album is less dance driven with heartfelt ballads and mid-tempo R&B singles. It is the type of album an artist of her caliber can create with artistic freedom. There is less risk involved.
You must also remember, with further promotion in store and a world tour in the works, this album will quickly garner the success of its predecessors.
Whether a fan or foe, you cannot deny Ms. Knowles’ artistry, and passion in every she does. It is not surprising, yet again, that she has commanded all our attention. And yes, we are paying attention!
