Tia Mowry caught some flack after discussing her non-traditional parenting style during a recent interview. Mowry even went as far as saying she doesn’t believe in spanking her kids because it says more about the parents’ lack of patience than the child.
While promoting her new Netflix show ‘Family Reunion,‘ Mowry says that she’s much like her on-screen character, Cocoa, and considers herself a non-traditional parent – unlike her identical twin and fellow actress Tamera Mowry.
Mom to son Cree, 8, and daughter Cairo, 1, the actress explains:
“Non-traditional in my opinion…means going with the flow. Not putting so many rules and regulations on your children. Allow them to be who they are and grow into who they are instead of dictating…”
When asked whether she punishes her son she adds:
“I was whopped [laughs]…if you’re spanking your child, in my opinion, it’s because of you. It’s because of you and where you are in your headspace. Your impatience. You just want to get this done and over with, where as, if you don’t spare the rod [spoil the child] then it takes more time. You have to talk to them. You have to explain. But I feel like, in my opinion, there is a better outcome. Because you’re explaining and you’re saying why instead of hitting them.”
Despite some of the backlash Mowry’s gotten, after listening closely to the interview, I had to agree. Though some of her critics believe she’s telling other parents how to parent, I believe she’s merely explaining what’s worked for her and why.
