Over the weekend, we learned of the passing of former DC mayor Marion Barry (See HERE).

After serving four terms as Washington D.C’s mayor and a long list of accomplishments under his belt, Barry’s legacy has, unfortunately, been tarnished by his 1990 arrest on drug possession and charges after FBI video footage of the mayor smoking crack cocaine in a hotel was leaked to the press.

The distasteful headline displayed by celebrity news site TMZ.com (above) perpetuated that very perception of Barry’s image, causing his supporters to bash the site and its owner, Harvey Levine. So much so, a petition was started in Barry’s honor urging the outlet to remove the headline and apologize to Barry’s family.

The petition reads…

We want his legacy to be honored the right way. Show respect to his family friends and supporters.

Just as the shock came a little over a year ago of the legendary Chuck Brown, the most “powerful local politician of his generation” in Washington, DC, Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr. has passed away this morning at 1:46 am at United Medical Center at the age of 78.

What are your thoughts sweethearts, do you find the headline to be disrespectful to the late mayor’s legacy and family members?

As of Monday, November 24, 2014, the petition has garnered approximately 15,000 signatures.
