Venus Williams just got her Bachelor degree of Science in Business Administration from Indiana University, and, it was a necessary reminder that we have plenty of positives Black women doing great work; we just need to pay greater attention to them.

It wasn’t widely known or well publicized that Williams returned to school to attain her Bachelors and I’m a bit sad that it wasn’t, until now.

I constantly encounter debates, on social media, where Black women are thought to be under or misrepresented. I strongly believe, however, that there are lots of positive images of Black women, we just pay attention to all the negative ones; contributing to the noise and less time celebrating women who work hard, every day, to be their very best. Venus, and sister Serena Williams, are two such women.

It’s important to not feed into mass misrepresentation when there are great women who inspire us each and every day. In fact, I’m sure many of you can attest to knowing some very inspiring women in your own lives. From mothers, to sisters and BFFs, to teachers and mentors. So why not celebrate them?

Venus and Serena Williams are not the only Black women and public figure we think are deserving of this spotlight. There is a list of inspirational Black women that has and made strides this year. Among the list we’d like to make note of Misty Copeland, State Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby, actresses and twins Tia and Tamera Mowry, media personalities Karen Civil and Angela Yee, award winning actresses Viola Davis and Kerry Washington, actress, singer and now Broadway alumni Keke Palmer, writer and television producers Shonda Rhimes and Courtney Kemp Agboh, federal judge Sunny Hostin, attorney general of California Kamala Harris and actress turn television producer Angela Basset just to name a few.

If you don’t know who some of these women are I urge you to please look them up. This is simply a reminder that public figures and positive images of Black women do exist, we just have to pay more attention to them.
