What is a SlutWalk?

Over the weekend, Amber Rose kicked off her very own SlutWalk in downtown LA. Although Rose had been promoting the walk for the past few months, there’s been much confusion as to what it is and the reason behind it.

Rose, who rose to fame through the rappers she’s dated and flaunting her voluptuous assets, received an enormous amount of backlash for seemingly promoting promiscuity. In fact, I strongly believe that it’s because of Rose’s raunchy image and the men she’s dated, why the walk’s message and mission became tainted with judgement and ridicule. And well, I’m not so sure Rose did a very good job of educating and making it clear where the SlutWalk originated and its true mission.

But, here’s some clarification. The SlutWalk did not start with Amber Rose.

According to Wikipedia

SlutWalk is a transnational movement of protest marches which began on April 3, 2011, in Toronto, Ontario, with subsequent rallies occurring globally. Participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman’s appearance, and call for an end to rape culture. The rallies began after a Toronto Police officer suggested that “women should avoid dressing like sluts” as a precaution against sexual assault.

While at the rally, Rose also got emotionally while discussing exes Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa during a speech to the thousands of attendees. The two men, whom she dated for two years (West) and was married to (Khalifa), have both made some defaming statements about the model and socialites post split. Rose, however, expressed her desire to forgive the men for “slut shaming” her.

As for one of Amber’s exes, Khalifa, the dynamic duo seem to be back on good terms. And it’s perhaps the best thing for the two considering they have a two year old son together.

Amber-Wiz-Reconcile-Post-SlutWalk

Just hours after her SlutWalk speech the socialite and model shared this photo of herself and ex captioned, “Still Ballin.” Whatever that is suppose to mean. Perhaps there is a reconciliation on the horizon. We wish the couple all the best.

Rose’s campaign has raised nearly $56,000 of its $65k goal.

We hope you now have some better understanding of what a SlutWalk is and its mission, despite its spokesperson and criticism you may have for her.

We’d love to hear your thoughts? Was Rose’s efforts diminished by her reputation? Do you think she has hurt or helped the mission?
