Looks like Lauryn Hill is headed to jail. Even after paying off her tax debt of $1 million, a New Jersey judge felt it was necessary to put the mom of six behind bars anyway.
On Monday afternoon, the judge announced his verdict although Hill’s attorney claimed she has already paid the $970,000 she owed the government. As for where the funds came? It’s likely her recent music deal with Sony fronted the bill.
Her attorney also asked for leniency because of charity work she had taken part in. Guess, the judge could care less.
Hill failed to file paper work and pay taxes between 2005 and 2007. Although Hill later claimed her family’s life had been in danger for not filing, clearly, all didn’t go too well.
In her response to the verdict Hills stated, “I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of. … I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me,” she continued with, “I sold 50 million units … now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.”
Okay…
She’s expecting to serve 3 months on house arrest and another 9 months on probation. Hill has been ordered to report to jail on July 8th.
