Have you ever heard of the saying “dress for success”? That phrase couldn’t be more appropriate for your everyday mindset. How you dress reflects how you feel about yourself and how others perceive you. In addition to the way you are perceived, it also may affect the decisions or thoughts that others have about you. This is especially true when it comes to your career endeavors. That’s why I recommend that people dress for their future role and not their current.
Dress for your future role
Where do you see yourself in the next few years? Do you see yourself in your current position, or do you see yourself heading for career advancement? If you see yourself advancing, you would want to prepare for that.
One suggestion is to pay attention to your colleagues, manager, and the leadership teams in your company. Align your attire to their own and company culture.
Act like you already have the job
Needless to say, you should also be exhibiting behavior; language, verbiage, and the approach of your future role. Be a critical thinker with a can-do attitude, who’s ready and willing to take on projects within your team and across functions. Put yourself in a position where you will be looked at as someone with ideas and who is helping to create solutions to problems.
Perception is key
The way you dress is a form of self-expression, but it also may affect how quickly you advance in the professional world. At first glance, people only see your outer layer (your clothing). So in this case, your clothing is what is initially speaking for you.
Radiate confidence
Your clothing should radiate confidence. Since perception is everything, you may want to be viewed as a confident professional. Studies have shown that in a professional environment well-dressed people are viewed as leaders, and therefore attract others.
Personally, I’ve always felt that when I’m looking my best I’m feeling unstoppable and fearless. It is almost as if my clothes are giving me an added boost of confidence, which allows me to conquer everything. In fact, there are studies that suggest that “the clothes you wear can affect your mental and physical performance,” Scientific American.
If your clothes can reflect confidence and success, what do your clothes say about you?
