In a statement released by her family early Saturday Morning, Geraldine Ferraro lost her battle to cancer in a Boston Hospital just before 10am.
The New York congresswoman was the first woman chosen to run as VP for a major party. She ran alongside Walter Mondale’s in his presidential campaign against Ronald Reagan in 1984.

In her speech at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, Ferraro stated, “By choosing a woman to run you send a powerful signal to all Americans: There are no doors we cannot unlock. We will place no limits on achievement. If we can do this, we can do anything.”

Sarah Palin, who often used Ferraro as an example during her own VP run alongside John McCain, included in a brief message on her Facebook page, “She broke one huge barrier and then went on to break many more. The world will miss her. May she rest in peace and may her example of hard work and dedication to America continue to inspire all women.”

Ferraro was 75 years old.
