Idris Elba recently sat down with GQ magazine revealing quite a bit about himself.
The usually private actor, reflects on being a struggling actor, working as a doorman and his past as a drug dealer.
He tells the magazine, “I was DJ’ing, but I was also pushing bags of weed; I was doing my work.”
“I had to. I know that sounds corny, but this is the truth,” he adds.
While working as a doorman at New York City hot spots and comedy clubs he recalls watching famous comedians, such as, Dave Chapelle and D.L Hughley.
“All those black comedians, they knew me as a doorman,” he tells the magazine.
Elba, now 41 years old, also recalls learning that he was not the father of his son.
After landing a leading role on HBO’s, “The Wire”, and becoming a household name, Elba’s happiness was shortlived after discovering he wasn’t the biological father of a son he thought to be his.
“The celebration of having a son – from a man’s perspective, it’s massive,” he said. “It wasn’t immediately obvious – well, it was, because he didn’t look like me. … To be given that and then have it taken away so harshly was like taking a full-on punch in the face.”
