The CW announced Thursday morning, July 9, that actress Javicia Leslie would replace Ruby Rose as the new Batwoman for season 2.
This makes Leslie the first Black and bisexual woman to play the role in a live-action TV/film production.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Leslie (Hollywood Reporter).
The actress took to her Instagram profile sharing the news to add, “For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day…it’s possible!”
And what does Rose thinks about the news? The fellow actress also took to the gram adding, “OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. ❤️ I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing !!”
And it isn’t the first time to show has made history in breaking down barriers. Upon choosing Rose for the part initially, she was the first lesbian superhero to lead in a scripted live-action TV series.
Season 2 of the popular CW series is expected to debut in early 2021.
