Mom Disheartened to Learn Textbook Rewrites History About Slavery

Imagine how one African American mother felt when she discovered that her son’s textbook had rewritten history, calling slaves transported from Africa, in the Atlantic slave trade, workers and immigrants instead of, well, slaves.

Roni Dean-Burren took to Facebook last week to vent her frustration over the wording of a passage in her son’s “World Geography” textbook that calls African slaves “workers” and “immigrants.” “The Atlantic slave trade brought millions of workers … notice the nuanced language there. Workers implies wages … yes?” “Erasure is real y’all!!! Teach your children the truth!!! ” According to a the publisher McGraw Hill, the Africans that were brought to the United States were workers, not slaves??? After the mother discovered the textbook was trying to erase history, the book company decided to rewrite the book.
