Nicki Nicki Nicki…where do we start?
If you watched Sunday night’s 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, then you may have seen the cringe-worthy exchange between pop stars Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj.
While Cyrus served as host, Minaj, who opened the show, took a very deliberate jab at Cyrus while accepting an award.
But here’s where it all started.
Several weeks ago, upon MTVs reveal of this year’s VMA nominations, Minaj became vocal on Twitter about her disappointment in her hit single “Anaconda” not being nominated for video of the year. She also expressed her belief that it was a constant reminder of Black female artists being overlooked and degraded for being overtly sexy while their white, and blond, counterparts get rewarded and celebrated.
“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” Minaj tweeted.
Unfortunately for Taylor Swift (who was nominated), after catching wind of Minaj’s rant, she took the rapper’s claims personal and decided to respond.
“I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your spot.”
Swift would later apologize for jumping the gun, assuming Minaj was talking specifically about her. “I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I’m sorry, Nicki,” she again tweeted.
While we don’t disagree with Nicki’s claims, here’s what we would urge her to get some of. How about some tact? A little class even. It’s called taking the high road. And if you must express you opinion, do gracefully.
That’s actually the point Cyrus, who hosted this year’s VMAs, was trying to make in a pre-VMAs interview with NY Times, leading up to the award show.
“If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself,” Cyrus told the New York Times.
“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind,” said Cyrus. “It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war… I know you can make it seem like, Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star. I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world. But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose.”
Now watch the controversial exchange between the two artists during the live show, Sunday night.
What are your thoughts, sweethearts? Should Nicki have kept her cool, or, should Miley have simply not answer the question.
Ironically, Minaj and Swift, who apparently made up, performed together last night.
