Sometimes it takes getting it wrong to get it right. That’s the mantra that I immediately think of when I hear Ciara speak of her relationship with NFL star Russell Wilson.

The singer was previously engaged with musician and rapper Future. The couple even share a young son together, but things were just not meant to be. It’s been more than a year following the breakup and Ciara is now engaged to Wilson and planning her elaborate wedding.

The singer tells Essence magazine during a recent interview, “I’d always wanted to have my own family,” she said. “And my pregnancy was planned when I was at a point in my life when I was finally ready to take on the responsibility.”

As for her breakup with the rapper and realizing that she’d become a single mother, “That wasn’t necessarily part of my vision. But the moment I realized I was going to be a single mother, I had to reflect and reorganize my thoughts. I decided to trust that God had a plan for me, and move forward one day at a time.”

But the singer remained hopeful that she could still have it all.

“I remember telling my friend the kind of guy I wanted: a God-fearing man with a very fun spirit who loves kids and would really, truly care for me. I was very specific because I do believe you can have it all.”

As for planning a life with Wilson she adds, “Marriage is something I look forward to. I believe in family, and the beauty of two people committing to spend their lives together.”

“We talk about everything. To me, to both of us, that’s the foundation you need for love to flourish and reach its highest place. I want to live with as much lightness as possible, so I can stay focused on my love of God, and being the best mom, and the best person, I can be…”

The latest issue of Essence mag, with the songstress also featured on the cover, hits newsstands on Friday.
