Tyler Perry has just made a major announcement. The television and movie producer, writer, director and actor is getting his very own late night talk show.
Perry made the announcement on social media, on Tuesday (February 18, 2014), when he tweeted the following message. He wrote, “Look what I’m working on. Coming on next Tuesday after #HavesAndHaveNots only on @OWNTV pic.twitter.com/87hyxUNGIo,” accompanied by an image seemingly showing off the show’s set.
The news shouldn’t come as a surprise however. Perry has long befriended and been mentored by talk show and media maven herself, Oprah Winfrey. Perhaps, Winfrey convinced Perry he needed his very own show.
Winfrey’s network, OWN, is also home to some of Perry’s other productions. In 2012 Perry struck a deal with Winfrey to develop new programming for the network after declined ratings.
Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, based on his films Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too?, initially called TBS home when it premiered in 2011 but was later cancelled and moved to OWN in 2013.
Perry has also developed two original series for the network, including a drama, The Haves and the Have Nots, and sitcom, Love Thy Neighbor, both premiering in 2013.
The Haves and the Have Nots has even set a record for OWN, scoring the highest ratings ever for a series premiere on the network. As of February 4, 2014, the drama has continued to dominate in ratings, being named the most watched program in all of cable television.
Talk about an accomplishment!
Is OWN hoping much of the same will continue with Perry’s own talk show? We think so.
The show is set to premiere Tuesday, February 25th, at 10 pm. We’ll keep you posted.
