So you’ve decided to go natural. You’ve cut out all the perm and you are ready to let your natural hair flow. But now what? With natural hair, the hardest thing to do is keep your hair moisturized. And you also have to get accustomed to using all those fancy smelling oils instead of the usual grease and oil sheen that you would for permed hair. But don’t worry. I have your back. Here are a few tips that I have used that will have your natural locks flowing luxuriously.
First, realize that our type of hair is naturally dry. When your hair is straight, the oil can penetrate the root of the hair and trickle down with ease. When you have your hair natural and curly, it is harder for the oil to maneuver down this type of hair pattern. Because of this these tips are to be done daily or at least three times a week to keep your hair moisturized.
Here are a few things you can do to keep your natural hair moisturized.
Before styling your hair you want to make sure you use a good moisturizer as a primer. This would include a good leave in conditioner. With this you are sealing in the moisture before you begin to add your other styling ingredients, ie. mousse, styling gel, etc.
1. Do not use the same products that you did with your relaxed hair. Your healthy, natural hair will not respond the same way as your relaxed hair did. Use natural oils such as the ones listed below to add sheen to your hair.
- Argon oil,
- Jojoba oil
- coconut oil
2. Add water to a spray bottle and spray throughout hair.
3. After you do this, place a shower cap over your hair. This method will help rehydrate your hair. This can be done daily because you are not adding product to the hair and will not have to wash anything out, thus not stripping your hair or causing breakage.
Now, I have just recently started on the natural high road and I will say it is a challenge. Especially to keep it looking moisturized. But as with everything, you have to do your research and use trial and error. Find out which products and methods work best for you and your hair. A great website to purchase natural products is www.carolsdaughter.com. Even if you feel like the products are a tad expensive, they are definitely worth it. Most natural products last over a period of time because it does not take as much of the product to do the job. You can also check out YouTube to find plenty of homemade recipes for natural products, such as Homemade Conditioner. When it comes to hair, you should be as creative and free as possible. Don’t look at it like a chore. Have fun!
