Why Natural Hair is Professional for Your Corporate Role

3

Do you think that wearing natural hair in a corporate role is professional? If you believe that your hair reflects your work performance or capabilities, then think again. The only thing that your hair reflects is your personality or your journey. It is YOUR hair. And since it is your hair, it is okay to be natural in your corporate role.

Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair
In the black community, we have been discriminated against for so many reasons, and it is disheartening to face discrimination because of our hair. Oftentimes, we have altered our hair to try to make others comfortable so that we can be perceived well in the corporate world. Now, with many states adopting the CROWN Act, and passing laws that prohibit discrimination based on hairstyle and hair texture, you should feel more at ease while rocking your natural tresses. We can break away from the stigma that curly, dreaded, or any hair type that is not straight is viewed as unprofessional.

Preparation
If you are just deciding to go natural, showing up at work with a new style may start a conversation among colleagues. No need to feel nervous, just show up confident. Confidence reflects a positive view of yourself which radiates to others. Be prepared for the comments and questions. If you do not feel like discussing your hair, then keep the conversation work-related.

What is your natural hairstyle?
You may have decided to go natural because your hair was damaged and you want to revive it. Maybe you have always been natural and have never put chemicals in your hair. Or maybe you just did the big chop and now you do not know what to do. There are so many ways to style your hair for work that does not result in uncomfortable stares from coworkers. With the help of social media, online communities, and tutorials you can get a lot of ideas on what to do with your hair. You can experiment with twist-outs, braid-outs, roller sets, braids, and so much more. Embrace your natural hair and feel confident that it is professional for your corporate role. After all, the focus should solely be on your work performance, not your hairstyle.

Couldn’t agree more! I love trying different styles within a professional setting. Our hair is always professional!

  2. I’ve been rocking natural hair in a corporate role for the past 15 years. I’ve had no crazy comments, not issues and I’ve gotten plenty of jobs. These days I rock my hair shaved really low.

I think we also have to do the work of breaking down this myth in our own community. I once had a Black female coworker tell me that wearing my hair in twists was not professional.
