Hairstylist Vidal Sassoon, 84, died Wednesday morning at his Bel Air, LA home after a long battle with Leukemia.

The news came via the stylists’ family in an official statement that reads,

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vidal Sassoon CBE, who died this morning at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by loved ones. The 84-year-old hairdresser was born in 1928 and sadly lost his battle with leukaemia today. He became the most celebrated hairdresser in the world having begun his career as an apprentice during the Second World War, going on to revolutionize an industry through his iconic haircuts, salons, schools and product lines. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 20 years Ronnie, his children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Sassoon became known for creating the modern day “bob”, providing easier ways for women to wear their hair with his “wash and wear” philosophy as women went back to work in the late 60’s and giving actress Mia Farrow her famous pixie cut for “Rosemary’s Baby”. He later opened up his first salon which became a worldwide chain in both New York and Los Angeles along with a multi-million dollar  hair care line of products.

A memorial will be set for a later date.
