Janelle Monae: New Face of CoverGirl

CoverGirl has chosen a new face for their cosmetic line and it is Janelle Monae. The eclectic artist debuted her 10 page ad spread for CoverGirl in the September issue of Vogue magazine. Monae, 26, has never been one to compromise on her style, whether it involves her music or her fashion.

While accepting the “Young, Black and Gifted” award during Black Girls Rock, Monae explained the meaning behind her “uniform”. Her father, a garbage man, and her mother, a janitor, always went to work in a uniform. Growing up, Monae had the utmost respect for her parents and they were her role models. “I stand here in my black and white, and I wear my uniform to honor them,” Monae said during the her acceptance speech. Her “uniform”, a coifed neo-pompadour and tailored black and white suit, has become her signature look. When deciding to pursue music, Monae created the “uniform” because she felt like she was showing up for work. As the new face of CoverGirl cosmectics, Monae says, “Becoming a Cover Girl is truly an honor and a gift. It opens a new platform for me to inspire women to feel stronger, braver and more beautiful inside and out.” Well said and well deserved Ms. Monae.

I am new to blogging...but let me tell you I have been writing since I was 5 years old. My mom still has the mini books that I made in Kindergarten. As a single mother of two boys and a full blown Gemini, my outlook on life has many ups and downs. Nothing frees me more than writing. My biggest prayer is that my words help someone who is going through rough times and makes them smile...or at least laugh a little.
