First Lady Michelle Obama was amongst the crowd of women to be honored at this year’s annual Black Girls Rock award ceremony.
In the First Lady’s speech she reminds, the young women who were present and ones watching Sunday night, to not doubt themselves and the value of education.
She also revealed her own struggles with insecurities but that by staying motivated and working hard she was able to overcome them.
“No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful,” Obama told the crowd, “I am so proud of you. My husband, your President, is so proud of you,” she said. “We have so much hope and dreams for you.”

The legendary actress Cicely Tyson was also an honoree. She spoke to the women in the audience, inspiring them to treat others the way they’d like to be treated, having self-respect and honoring their elders. Listen to her speech below.
Black Girls Rock was founded by philanthropist and celebrity DJ Beverly Bond, to celebrate women of color in the fields of entertainment, politics, medicine and education.
