Michelle Obama On Marriage, “Marry Your Equal”

During the annual Essence Music Festival, July 5-7 in New Orleans, Michelle Obama sat down with Gayle King during a one-on-one interview to drop some gems on her experience as first lady, being a public figure and the wife of former POTUS Barack Obama.

On the topic of relationships, Obama discussed her initial thoughts on meeting her now husband and how much work is required in marriage. And it’s that work that makes it important to choose the right mate.

“….that’s why it’s important to marry someone that you respect. It’s important to marry someone that is your equal. And to marry somebody, and to be with somebody, who wants you to win as much as you want them to win.”

She went a bit further compare choosing a spouse in the same way one would choose a teammate in a sporting event.

“My husband is my teammate. If we are going to win this game together, he has to be strong and he has to be okay with me being strong. I do not want a weak player on my team, nor does he.

Sometimes we accept weak in one another because it feels easy. Be cautious of the man or woman who wants just the easy person. The person who’s not going to force them to grow. The person who’s not going to expect them to change. Who’s not going to hold them accountable. Because if you want to be on a winning team you wouldn’t pick somebody off the bench who’s just going to show up weak. You want to pick somebody who’s going to carry you through and those are the things that get you over the hard times”

We’re betting Mrs. Obama know a thing or two of what she’s talking about. She and Barack have been married for 27 years.

Here’s a recap of Mrs. O’s sit down with King as she talks being relationship goals and more.
